Food Benefits Scheduled to End for Tens of Millions During Prolonged US Government Shutdown
USDA officials announced on Saturday that monthly food benefits through a critical national support systems will not be distributed during the coming month amid the persistent federal government shutdown.
Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks
The government shutdown was in nearly a month as officials revealed the news, which followed calls from over 200 Democratic representatives urging the department to tap into contingency funds to pay for next month's benefits.
“Bottom line, funds are depleted,” the department confirmed. “Now, no payments will be distributed” starting next month.
Widespread Impact
More than 41 million individuals rely on the regular assistance, as reported by official statistics. In certain states, including one southwestern state, reliance on the program affects 21% of residents.
Documents reviewed by journalists revealed that the department decided against using contingency funding for November food benefits.
Political Stalemate
Congressional leaders continue to disagree regarding how to support and resume federal agencies.
Remarks from the director at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities noted that the administration could have acted to take earlier action to prevent benefits from running out.
“They had the ability and responsibility made moves earlier to get ready to use these funds,” the remarks concluded. “Rather, it may choose not to use them to secure political leverage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to influence Democratic senators to approve a spending bill to restart federal functions.
Emergency Measures
State leaders from multiple regions activated emergency protocols in recent days to allocate funds to address food insecurity preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping in November.
