Israeli citizens commemorate two-year remembrance of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations proceed
Citizens have assembled across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"The bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled formal memorials until mid-October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' representatives gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the terms of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate familiar with the talks revealed that an night meeting of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.
The official explained the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the deal.
He added that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to close the differences between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Negotiations
- A lasting truce
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Post-war administration of the area
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place seems like home anymore and until every captive come back no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to express their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester one woman explained: "We need do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Research now regularly indicate that about the majority of the population desire the conflict to end in as payment for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of the music event, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.
From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"Once the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, notably my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis said two more dead people had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south, medical staff reported.
