New Year's Partygoers Advised to Bundle Up with Snowfall Expected Throughout the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Proceed Amid Alerts
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are expected to proceed, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," said the Met Office.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, meaning additional clothing a necessity, as per forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday
Moving into Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

- The public have been urged to leave additional time for travel on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.
Temperatures Forecast to Fall Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Public Health Alerts Released
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency stated this meant the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is utterly essential.
