Preparations for Trump-Putin Meeting Shelved Days Following Budapest Talks Announced

There are "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has declared.

This past week the US president stated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Budapest soon to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The administration withheld any more details on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with insiders suggesting the president had urged him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and European leaders to halt the war on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he stated.

Moscow has consistently objected against halting the current line of contact.

Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, indicating that halting hostilities would simply constitute a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict needed to be addressed, Lavrov emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a series of comprehensive conditions that include the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the front line were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He additionally stated the sole subject that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday came ahead of speculation that the US was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the missiles had proven to be a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he added.
