Taliban Utilized Discarded UK Gear to Find Local Nationals That Served With Western Troops, Investigation Hears

An informant has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK failed to secure classified technology permitting Afghanistan's rulers to locate local individuals that had served with western forces.

Data Breach Puts Numerous in Danger

Person A, called Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the security lapse were advised to relocate and alter their contact details to avoid detection from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are looking into the UK government's management of a catastrophic breach of personal details affecting almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had applied to move to the United Kingdom to flee the regime.

Data Disclosure Was Discovered

An electronic document with private information, including names, contact details and sometimes relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member employed at special operations center in February 2022.

The leak became known only in August 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had requested to move to the UK appeared on online platforms.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is a misunderstanding that militant forces do not have similar capabilities that allied forces use,” Person A informed the committee.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire a contact number, they are able to track your exact position. That's precisely what the unit did.”

When questioned about if militant forces possessed advanced decryption, Person A stated: “They have complete capability.”

Consequences of the Security Lapse

Initial findings presented to the investigation suggested that approximately fifty kin and associates of people concerned by the leak had been murdered.

A superinjunction regarding the incident was put in force in late 2023 and blocked all details regarding the matter from being made public until July 2025.

Security Recommendations

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization she collaborated with told individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate when possible and changed their mobile numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, if the Taliban had access to these details, would result in identification and capture,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower disputed that an official review carried out by a former official had been wrong to state that the possession of the records by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that affected people are not confronting the Taliban; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”

The source explained terrible violence suffered by affected individuals, comprising electrocution, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“There are cases of four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to force households to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
