McDonald's has taken down a Christmas advert created via generative AI following facing considerable public disapproval.

The 45-second spot was created with the help of generative AI clips and was originally uploaded publicly for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Social Media Criticism and Removal

Shortly after its release, commenters lambasted the employment of AI in the film. A number of labeled it "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".

"This experience represents an key learning as we examine the appropriate use of AI," said a statement from the company.

The advert was developed for the brand by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It showed various things that might go awry during the Christmas break, using the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Trend of AI in Advertising

Campaigns that feature AI-created content have become a increasing trend among large brands, particularly for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has recently released back-to-back AI-generated Christmas ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Since clips produced with generative AI are prone to distort the longer they run, most AI video outputs tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also raised concerns about the replacement of human roles in the creative industry, with some critics noting it could negatively impact work for actors.

Defense from the Production Company

After the ad being taken down, a producer's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

According to her, the creation required "over a month and a half" and involved creating "thousands of takes" which were then shaped during the edit "in the same way we would on any traditional production".

"This was not an experiment," she said. "The result was a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's commercial was predominantly criticized, the response for other AI-assisted holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis achieved a significant "favorable response" from the public.

However, various brands have likewise encountered criticism for employing the technique in advertising. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that some described as "lazy" and "uncanny".

The situation illustrates the ongoing debate within the marketing and creative sectors about the balance between technological innovation and audience reception.
