The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
