The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
