The New Mayor Vows a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in First Speech
During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his term.
An Unprecedented Leader
The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

A Sweeping Blueprint
Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Headwinds
The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.
Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.
The Basic Tests of Leadership
Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
